For All Our Futures

Pesticide-Free Dartington is a local community initiative, set up by residents and supported by the Pesticide-Free Devon Network. We want to raise awareness of the harm caused by pesticides, unite the voices of those who share this concern, initiate dialogue with those currently using pesticides, and share information, practical alternatives and support on our journey towards a healthier, sustainable and bio-diverse Dartington!

Why?

Pesticides — including herbicides (weedkillers), insecticides and fungicides — are designed to kill unwanted plants, insects and other organisms. However, it is increasingly clear that pesticides cause harm not only to their targets, but also to plants, insects and other organisms in the surrounding ecosystems.

Studies repeatedly link pesticide use to the massive decline in pollinating insects in the UK and globally, while growing evidence shows wider impacts on birds, aquatic life, soil health, pets and human health.

Healthy biodiversity is essential to resilient ecosystems and thriving communities. If we do not protect the diversity of life around us, our local environment will become increasingly depleted and less able to support wildlife, food systems and human wellbeing in the long term.

Many towns, councils, schools and community spaces across the UK are already reducing or eliminating pesticide use, adopting strategies that are in balance with nature and human wellbeing. Dartington Parish Council have already written a Local Biodiversity Plan which states the intention to support a community-wide phasing out of pesticide use. All land managed by the Parish Council is maintained without the use of pesticides.

Our Vision

We want to support a community transition away from the use of pesticides across Dartington — in our public green spaces, as well as in schools, businesses, allotments, gardens, moving toward healthier and more sustainable alternatives.

Community-wide partnership is central to creating a Pesticide-Free Dartington. We are reaching out to everyone who lives, works, plays or spends time here — including farmers, gardeners, land managers, landowners, local councils, land trusts, businesses, schools, community groups and residents.

Our Intentions

  • To engage in open and respectful dialogue about transitioning away from and ending pesticide use in the Dartington area.
  • To share up-to-date information about the environmental and health impacts of pesticides
  • To highlight practical, pesticide-free alternatives already being used locally and elsewhere.
  • To build support for a community-wide pledge by individuals and organisations across Dartington.
